The new fare system was introduced with promises of increased earnings for drivers. But let's look at the reality and how it's affecting our drivers.
Drivers are facing losses with the new fare structure. For example, if a fare ends up being $6.68, the taxi meter (MDT) rounds it down to $6.65 to match the closest 5 cents denomination.
This might not seem like much at first glance, but it adds up. Especially since Singapore doesn't use 1-cent coins anymore, rounding down makes sense for cash transactions. But why does this also apply to cashless payments?
Assuming a driver completes 20 trips a day, this rounding down costs them about $300 a year. That's a significant amount for anyone.
